ESCs used by NASA

Post by ronvol »

Much information has been gathered over the last 12 months or so in relation to the early 'electronic stills' cameras that NASA used in-flight.

Timm Chapman has been able to put together a very detailed white paper on the Department of Defence's HERCULES system which was based around the Nikon F4 body and was the first ESC known to have flown on a NASA mission.

Here's a link to footage that I've posted on my YouTube channel showing the system being used in-flight - http://youtu.be/6iwMXNo_bLo

New information is becoming available about the 2nd ESC to have flown on a NASA mission. One month after the HERCULES system flew; NASA sent up a system known as the HAWKEYE II. This system was based on the Nikon F3 body and would become the forerunner to the well known Kodak DCS-DC3 system (the worlds first professional SLR ESC).

A HAWKEYE body (Nikon F3 with Hawkeye back) sold on eBay a few years ago for US$612.00.

Jim McGarvey (Kodak Engineer) has had information about the HAWKEYE on his website for a couple of years now.
